Coronary Calcium Screening

Heart health and proper function over time is crucial to overall wellness. A Coronary Calcium Screening involves a low dose of radiation used to detect and measure the amount of calcium in the walls of your coronary arteries to evaluate the risk for Heart Attack in the coming years.

At Medical Imaging of Grapevine, we're proud to offer Coronary Calcium scans to our patients as one of the broad range of imaging modalities we carry out at our radiologist-owned and operated facility. We're a private location with no hospital affiliation, which means we can offer our services at a much lower price than you'll find at a hospital-run imaging facility.

What Is a Coronary Calcium Screening?

Calcium build up in the arteries surrounding the heart has a number of negative implications on heart health. This scan is a specialized CT imaging procedure that detects calcifications of the coronary arteries even though you may be asymptomatic.

The test generates a number called your Agatston score, which is used to represent the amount of calcium in these particular blood vessels. This score help predict the likelihood of you having a Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) in the coming years and helps your Doctor to formulate a treatment plan for you.

This particular CT uses a low dose of radiation, and non-invasive. The amount of radiation exposure of a coronary calcium screening is estimated to be approximately the same amount that humans are naturally exposed to throughout an average year.

Should You Get a Coronary Calcium Scan?

If you're at high risk for heart disease, your doctor may recommend this type of screening. Risk factors include dietary and lifestyle habits as well as family history. Risk factors include: High Blood Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Family History of Heart Attacks, Obesity, Physical Inactivity and others

The procedure is relatively non-invasive, and you likely won't be given many (if any) special instructions to prepare for it. The screening should take between 10 and 20 minutes.

At Medical Imaging of Grapevine, we carry out Coronary Calcium Screenings as well as a wide variety of other imaging modalities under the careful supervision of our fellowship-trained, board-certified team of radiologists.
